Aiming High

“Requiem For A Dream”. Now there’s a film to cause havocĀ in your cerebral cortex. Mmm… fucked up stuff for any drug addicts to think about. Anyone else… just make your own choices I guess.

When I was in New York (”Requiem For A Dream” is set in Brooklyn) I was surprised by the culture of taking medication for any and every complaint. Back in IrelandĀ I’d not known anyone my age to suffer from ADHD or bipolarity - I’m sure people did but, even if they were aware that they did, they didn’t admit it openly. At college in NY it seemed that guys and girls admitting to ADHD or bipolarity were as common as those claiming hayfever.

One of the lads on my football team enjoyed painkillers. He’d expertly convince our physio that any knock he took required a visit to the doctor’s surgery from where he’d inevitably return with a pot of Vicadin or Xanax. His incentive for devouring the pills as quick as he thought reasonable was to make use of the refill option on the prescription. More drugs for him, more money for the drug companies - everyone gets happy.

Medicated or not he was a cool guy to hang out with. We were drinking partners. His ambition, he used to tell me, was to drink so much that he’d be too fat to walk. Then they’d give him a wheelchair and he’d be able to spend the afternoon rolling around drinking from a beer helmet and shouting at people.

The great thing about America is given the right attitude and prescription-happy doctors you’ve got a great shot at reaching your highest goals.

Strung - here’s beautiful Jared Leto telling beautiful Jennifer Connelly how hot she is - Out.
